An important aspect of this trip is the inclusion of the Leave No Trace Trainer course. The goal of this course is to educate participants on the seven principles of leave no trace practices and outdoor ethics to better care for our outdoor and wilderness spaces. Participants will leave qualified to run Leave No Trace awareness workshops in their communities.
The trip begins in the foothills of the mighty San Juan Mountains. On the first day, we steadily climb up through the forest, meandering along beautiful streams, and emerge above the timberline. For the majority of the trip, we hike the gorgeous Continental Divide trail, dazzled by an array of spectacular peaks rising on both sides. As we continue along the trail, we encounter one beautiful valley after another. These valleys channel water toward the Gulf of Mexico on the East and the Pacific Ocean on the West.
At the end of the trail, we head into town and soak our weary bones in the healing mineral waters of Pagosa Hot Springs - recently designated in the Guinness Book of World Records as the deepest in the world. Afterward, we travel back to the lodge for a feast of grilled steaks, roasted corn on the cob, baked potatoes, fresh salad, garlic bread, and buckets of iced tea.
